Psilocybin, a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in certain mushrooms, has long been stigmatized due to legal and cultural restrictions. Yet, this emerging study suggests that it could play a role in modulating the gut-brain axis and symptom management in IBS patients. This investigation of psilocybin emphasizes growing interest in functional ingredients.

Pet owners are increasingly interested in functional ingredients like cannabidiol (CBD) to offer benefits beyond standard nutrition. CBD, which has moved from an ingredient that wouldn't dare be caught listed on an ingredient, to a subsection of the supplement market focused solely on its potential properties, such as calming, anti-inflammatory, cardiac, anti-nausea, and appetite-stimulating effects.

Crucially, limited research currently supports these proposed benefits. A major lack of long-term, large-scale studies means these effects in companion animals are not definitively confirmed or denied. This uncertainty is compounded by safety concerns, including associations between CBD use and liver toxicity in pets. Therefore, while human studies exist, caution is necessary when applying that data, as dogs may have different physiological responses than humans.

Another interesting example is turkey tail mushrooms, which have long been valued in holistic medicine for its immune-supporting properties. Recently, these mushrooms have been gaining attention among consumers for their potential use in pets, with stories highlighting their possible impact on managing common conditions such as lipomas and warts for dogs and cats.

Despite this growing interest, research on their use in pets remains very limited. Some anecdotal reports suggest that compounds in turkey tail may support immune health, but much is still unknown about safe dosages, long-term effects, or potential interactions with other supplements or medications. While clinical trials in pets remain limited, the growing interest in mushrooms and other natural compounds reflects consumer interest in functional ingredients in animal health.

Challenges and Considerations in the Functional Ingredient Space

While the opportunities are exciting, transitioning from science to market-ready products presents its own challenges. Regulatory hurdles remain significant, particularly when dealing with compounds that have historically been restricted. Ensuring safety and compliance requires careful navigation of evolving laws and guidelines.

Scientific validation is another critical factor. Many functional ingredients begin their journey with promising anecdotal evidence or preliminary research, but rigorous clinical trials are essential to establish efficacy and safety for each species of interest.

In the case of CBD, which has gained broader acceptance among consumers in both human and pet markets, its regulatory status remains complex—the FDA CVM classifies CBD as a drug, and no state currently permits its use in pet products, although the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) permits its use in supplements that comply with NASC guidelines.

Without a foundation in rigorous scientific evidence, brands risk overpromising benefits, which can erode consumer trust and lead to regulatory scrutiny. For emerging ingredients in both the human and the pet space, the challenge will lie in brands balancing innovation with responsibility.

At BSM Partners, staying at the forefront of emerging science is a core part of our mission. We monitor research on novel functional ingredients, evaluating their potential efficacy, safety, and market viability. By connecting cutting-edge scientific insights to actionable product strategies, we help brands innovate responsibly.
