Hill's Pet Nutrition and Bond Pet Foods Receive FDA No-Objection Letter for First Animal Protein Produced via Precision Fermentation for Pet Food

Developed in collaboration with Hill's after completing a six-month longitudinal feeding study in dogs, FDA's review and no objection to the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) Notice marks a major milestone toward commercialization of a new source of high-quality animal protein for pet food.
Lamb Protein Yeast is the first ingredient to emerge from the Hill's–Bond collaboration to successfully complete FDA's GRAS Notice review process for healthy adult dogs, supporting use at inclusion levels of up to 15% of the finished food. This achievement follows several years of joint development applying precision fermentation—a proven technology long used to produce human food ingredients for cheesemaking, as well as enzymes and vitamins—to develop a carefully-selected animal protein ingredient with a complete amino acid profile that includes nutritional characteristics comparable to a traditional lamb protein.
"We are thrilled to achieve this important regulatory milestone with Hill's," said Rich Kelleman, Founder and CEO of Bond Pet Foods. "The results of our six-month feeding study, together with the FDA's Letter of No Objection, demonstrate the safety and nutritional performance of our brewed proteins and bring us a significant step closer to delivering a reliable source of high-quality protein for pets."
Bond and Hill's have also completed the feeding study in cats using Lamb Protein Yeast and are preparing to submit additional information to FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine in support of feline use. This work reflects the companies' shared commitment to advancing science-based nutrition solutions for both dogs and cats.
"This achievement underscores our long-standing commitment to science-led innovation in pet nutrition," said Dave Baloga, Executive Vice President, Science and Technology at Hill's Pet Nutrition. "Lamb Protein Yeast expands the range of science-backed nutritional options we can deliver, supporting our sustainability objectives while maintaining the rigorous nutritional standards for which Hill's is known."
The Hill's–Bond collaboration was first announced in 2021 with the goal of developing an alternative approach that meets the dietary needs of pets through established, science-based processes versus utilizing traditional animal protein ingredients. Key milestones along the way have included the successful commercial-scale production of Lamb Protein Yeast and the delivery of more than 25 metric tons to Hill's facilities for formulation, testing and regulatory evaluation.
Bond's precision fermentation platform uses optimized yeast cultures to produce proteins that are nutritionally comparable to those derived from conventional animal sources, providing a consistent, scalable and environmentally responsible protein source for pet food manufacturers.
With regulatory status for use in dog food, and work underway to support feline use, Hill's and Bond are moving into commercialization in the US market, translating years of joint development into real-world application. Source: PR Newswire

Hill's Pet Nutrition (Hill's), a global leader in science-led nutrition and US veterinarians' No. 1 recommended brand, today announced the new Hill's Prescription Diet Metabolic + j/d, bringing two innovations together that help manage feline weight and mobility issues in one powerful formula. Pet parents who have overweight cats struggling with mobility no longer have to choose which condition to address with their veterinarian.
According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention's 2022 State of Pet Obesity Report, 61% of cats evaluated by U.S. veterinary professionals were classified as overweight or obese. Excess weight can negatively impact mobility and quality of life. Purina Pro Plan Launches AdvantEDGE Line with Probiotic-Powered Nutrition for Dogs, Cats

Backed by decades of Purina research, every AdvantEDGE formula is built on a foundation of probiotics to support digestive and immune health.
The line spans two specialized formulas for both dogs and cats: Adult Digestive Support+, which delivers a breakthrough triple-action blend of prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics to support overall digestive health, and Senior Support+, which targets three critical areas of wellbeing for pets age 7+.

The Science Behind Pro Plan AdvantEDGE   Approximately 70% of a pet's immune system originates in the gastrointestinal tract, making digestive health foundational  to a pet's wellbeing.  Probiotics are at the core of every Pro Plan AdvantEDGE formula — and Adult Digestive Support+ goes a step further with a triple-action blend of prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics working together in a single, highly digestible formula to support overall digestive health.
'A healthy digestive system is foundational to a pet's overall health — and AdvantEDGE was developed specifically to target that,' said Dr. RuthAnn Lobos, senior veterinarian at Purina. 'Probiotics are at the core of every formula, with each line going deeper where pets need it most.'   Pro Plan AdvantEDGE Features Triple-Action Digestive Support for Adult Dogs and Cats   Formulated to support overall digestive health in adult dogs and cats, Adult Digestive Support+ delivers 3-in-1 microbiome support through its prebiotic, probiotic, and postbiotic blend.   Cats: Pro Plan AdvantEDGE Digestive Support+ Salmon & Rice Dry Cat Food delivers 100% complete and balanced nutrition.   Senior Support+ Delivers Comprehensive Nutrition for Dogs and Cats Age 7+   A pet's nutritional needs begin to shift as early as age seven. Pro Plan AdvantEDGE Senior Support+ was developed to meet those evolving needs, delivering probiotics for digestive health alongside targeted support across three critical areas of senior wellness — distinct for dogs and cats. Each formula features real chicken as the #1 ingredient and contains no artificial flavors.
'Senior pets have very unique nutritional requirements, and a one-size-fits-all approach simply isn't enough,' said Dr. Lobos. 'Pro Plan AdvantEDGE Senior Support+ was built with those specific needs in mind — from cognitive and immune health to joint mobility and healthy weight maintenance. High-quality, science-backed nutrition can make a real difference in the quality and length of a senior pet's life.'

Innovation Is Defining Longevity in Pet Health

At Leap Years®, we see longevity not as a trend, but as a foundational change in how pet health products are developed, evaluated, and delivered.
Innovation Has Shifted the Pet Longevity Conversation
For decades, aging in pets was largely addressed through disease-based care. Products were typically introduced only after visible decline had already set in, including joint stiffness, reduced mobility, cognitive changes, and/or chronic conditions, reflecting a reactive model of care.
Today, innovation is moving the industry toward a system-level view of health. Instead of targeting isolated clinical signs, emerging solutions focus on the biological processes that drive aging itself. This shift reframes the conversation from 'senior dog solutions' to lifespan-wide intervention, supporting dogs earlier, before decline becomes apparent.
Several factors are accelerating this shift. Pet parents are more informed, seeking products grounded in real science. Advances in human longevity research are creating a halo effect, raising expectations for similar innovation in pet health. At the same time, the pet industry has matured, with greater investment in research and development, clinical validation, and functional ingredients.   Aging Is a Biological Process, Not a Life Stage
One important reframe underway is the understanding that aging does not suddenly begin in a pet's senior years. It's a biological process that starts at the cellular level, long before outward signs appear.
Middle age is when cellular changes quietly accumulate, setting the stage for future decline. Yet historically, this stage has received the least attention.
As Dr. Heather Oxford, DVM, MPH, CVA, CCRT, explains, longevity isn't defined by how long a dog lives, but by how long the dog maintains functional resilience. In her clinical experience and shown on the graphic below, health follows a predictable arc: early growth, a peak period of resilience, and then a gradual decline that accelerates if aging processes are left unaddressed.1 The goal of modern longevity science is not to extend the tail end of life, but to flatten that decline, keeping dogs in the 'good health' zone longer and shortening the time spent in poor health.
This framework reframes aging as a continuous biological process. Dr. Oxford notes that the most overlooked opportunity occurs during middle age, when cellular function is already declining beneath the surface, even though outward signs of aging haven't yet appeared. Intervening at this stage has the greatest potential to increase health span, preserving strength, mobility, cognition, and metabolic resilience over time.
Rather than reacting to visible decline, this model underscores why cellular-level support earlier in mid-life is critical. By supporting the systems that drive cellular metabolism and resilience, innovation can help extend the years dogs spend thriving, fundamentally redefining what 'aging well' looks like in pet health.
This perspective challenges the industry to rethink how and when supplements are introduced. Biologically speaking, healthy aging products should not be reserved for 'older dogs,' but integrated into wellness routines well before aging becomes obvious.     Cellular Science as the Next Wave of Pet Health Innovation
At the heart of this shift is cellular science. Research increasingly shows that aging is driven by changes at the cellular level, including declines in cellular metabolism and the accumulation of dysfunctional cells.2
One key area of focus is NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). This is what fuels the health of the cells throughout an animal's body via their mitochondria – the powerhouses of the cell. As a dog or person ages, their NAD levels decline, which means their cells start to lose the ability to function as they should. And that leads to cells not dividing properly and ultimately, chronic disease and breakdown of different systemic functions.
Another critical factor is cellular senescence. Senescent cells are cells that have stopped functioning properly but remain in the body, contributing to inflammation and tissue dysfunction. Over time, their accumulation contributes to many age-related declines.   Leap Years Cellular Health System for Dogs is on the Front Lines of Longevity Innovation
Leap Years' dual-action approach supports healthy aging at the cellular level:
Boosts NAD Production: Data show that Leap Years boosts NAD in as little as 48 hours.
Supports natural clearance of senescent (old) cells: helping reduce the accumulation of damaged cells that interfere with normal function.

Together, these mechanisms support sharp cognition, continued vitality, and ongoing engagement with family life. Leap Years addresses one of the root causes of aging at the cellular level, where subtle biological changes begin to accumulate, potentially leading to chronic diseases and functional decline later in life. This can translate into more walks, more play, more focus, and more 'like-themselves' moments later.
Backed by a clinical trial (published, 2024) in dogs with published results and supported by a canine safety study. Optimal potency formula with known gut absorption in dogs. Leap Years supports your dog's attention (cognition) and engagement with family and others.
As I often say, longevity isn't about chasing more years; it's about protecting the years that matter most. Innovation only counts if it delivers real, measurable benefits for dogs and peace of mind for the people who love them.   The Future of Pet Health Is Proactive
The future of pet health innovation lies in extending health span, not simply lifespan. This means helping dogs stay active, engaged, and comfortable for as long as possible.
Redefining 'dog years' requires better science and earlier intervention. Cellular health is more than a niche concept; it's becoming the foundation of next-generation pet wellness. Pet parents are ready for this evolution, and the brands that embrace it will shape the future of longevity in pet health. Source: Dogster

Delickcious Revamps Chunk Shape in Its Wet Cat Food Line

This decision was driven by an analysis of global trends, particularly the growing demand for maximum naturalness.
"We are seeing a strong, growing trend toward the humanization of pet food. Today's pet parents want to see natural-looking food in their pets' bowls. Perfectly identical, geometric chunks are gradually losing relevance because real meat simply doesn't look like that," explains Yelyzaveta Medushivska, Senior Brand Manager for Delickcious. "That's why we decided to switch to irregular chunks for our complete wet cat food line. First, it gives the product a much more natural appearance. Second, the juicy, whole chunks in varying shapes create a highly appetizing texture. Most importantly, we've implemented an updated cooking technology that makes the flavor even richer."
Internal research has shown that cats actually prefer the taste of the new format over the previous version. This confirmed the team's hypothesis: the shape of a chunk influences not just the visual appeal of the product, but the actual tasting experience for the pets.
"We knew that palatability is a core feature for Delickcious. Therefore, it was crucial for us to not just change the shape, but to ensure it positively affected how pets perceive the food," notes Andriy Savchuk, Product Manager at Kormotech. "During testing, we kept the recipe exactly the same—we only changed the shape of the chunk. The results showed that the product performed better in comparative palatability tests. This proved that the new shape doesn't just look more natural, but actually makes the food even more appealing to cats."
The update applies to three complete wet cat food recipes:
Chunks with salmon and mussels in gravy; Chunks with lamb, chicken fillet, and green beans in jelly; Chunks with duck, chicken fillet, and spinach in gravy. Source: Kormotech
