Unlock Innovative Possibilities in Wet Pet Food Formulation with the Power of Faba Bean Protein

Demand for wet pet food is on the rise, with the segment's growth being driven by pet owners looking for premium and nutritionally balanced pet food with good palatability.i At the same time, consumers increasingly want to see more plant-based offerings that also reflect their own sustainability values. In response to these evolving expectations, BENEO has conducted a new set of technical trials to explore the potential of its faba bean protein concentrate as a functional, plant-based ingredient for wet pet food.
Exploring Alternatives to Animal Blood Plasma
In premium and super-premium wet pet food, maintaining consistent product quality is essential. These products typically contain at least 50 wt% total moisture, and their quality is standardised and maintained through the addition of spray-dried animal blood plasma (ABP). This ingredient provides excellent texturizing and emulsifying properties but can come at a high cost. Moreover, due to its animal origin, ABP is increasingly perceived as undesirable by consumers who increasingly want more plant-based ingredient options for their pets.
  To address these challenges, BENEO initiated a series of technical trials in collaboration with Passion4Food, a specialist service provider for the pet food industry. The objective was to evaluate whether faba bean protein concentrate could be used as a suitable and cost-effective alternative to ABP in wet pet food formulations.
Technical Trials Confirm Strong Functional Performance
The initial trials investigated the performance of BENEO's faba bean protein concentrate when partially (50%) or fully (100%) replacing ABP in high-protein wet pet food loaves (paté format). The results showed that the ingredient could be successfully used for both full and partial ABP replacement, with no significant change in the end product's weight or texture. This means producers can maintain desired product quality while achieving considerable cost savings compared to ABP. Based on these promising results, BENEO carried out follow-up trials using a test recipe suitable for commercial scalability.  

As part of the following additional trials, the same percentages of ABP and faba bean protein concentrate were used and compared to a test recipe in which ABP was partially replaced at 50% with pea protein concentrate.
  The data demonstrated that BENEO's faba bean protein concentrate acted as an excellent and cost-effective alternative binder to ABP, with no significant changes observed in loaf height, weight, hardness, or adhesiveness. In contrast, the partial replacement of ABP with pea protein concentrate led to a significant decrease in hardness, indicating that faba bean protein concentrate provides a higher binding capacity in wet pet food loaves. This makes it a valuable ingredient for maintaining the desired texture of the end-product while reducing reliance on animal-derived binders.  
Patent Application Supports Scientific Innovation
Following these successful results, BENEO filed an international patent application for the use of faba bean protein concentrate as an alternative to spray-dried animal blood plasma in wet pet food. The patent application was published in August 2025, underscoring BENEO's dedication to research-based innovation and functional ingredient development for the pet food industry.
Nutritional and Formulation Advantages
Beyond its technical and cost benefits, BENEO's faba bean protein concentrate also provides strong nutritional value. With a protein content of 61 g per 100 g on a dry matter basis and an ileal digestibility score of almost 90%, it is a highly digestible source of protein. Its amino acid profile is relatively rich in lysine and can complement cereal proteins, such as rice protein or vital wheat gluten, to achieve a complete essential amino acids profile.

The ingredient also provides flexibility for product positioning. It is listed in the EU Catalogue of Feed Materialsii and can be used in formulations that carry 'no grain' claims.
Contributing to Sustainable and Locally Sourced Solutions
Sustainability has become an increasingly important consideration for both consumers and producers. BENEO's faba bean protein concentrate offers strong sustainability credentials linked to the faba bean crop and to BENEO's local sourcing and production processes in Germany. Local production in the new state-of-the-art pulse-processing plant, located in Obrigheim, further supports short transport distances, secures supply and reduces the environmental impact compared to more resource-intensive ingredients.

Made up of amino acids, proteins build and maintain structures in the body and help support muscles, bones, blood, organs and skin and coat health. Because dogs and cats can't synthesize all the essential amino acids they need, these nutrients must come from complete and balanced pet food.     Sources of Protein    Proteins are commonly classified into two large categories based on their source: animal-based and plant-based.  
  Animal-based protein includes chicken, beef, turkey, lamb and fish.  Plant-based protein includes ingredients like soybeans, corn and lentils. 
  While animal protein sources have higher amounts of essential amino acids, dogs can still thrive on a well-formulated plant-based diet. Cats, on the other hand, are obligate carnivores and rely on animal-based protein for specific amino acids, like taurine, methionine and cystine.    How Much Protein Does My Pet Need?    The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) has set the following minimum protein requirements for pet food: 
  Dogs   Adult: ≥ 18% crude protein  Puppy: ≥ 22% crude protein  Cats   Adult: ≥ 26% crude protein   Kitten: ≥ 30% crude protein 
  Puppies and kittens require a higher amount of protein in their diet to support growth and development. Additionally, cats need more protein than dogs and have more specific amino acid requirements. 
  Protein is an essential nutrient for dogs and cats, and diets containing more than the minimum required amount of protein are often beneficial. In fact, in obese dogs, high-protein, low-carb diets can promote both proper body condition and steadier blood glucose levels. Additionally, studies suggest that aging pets likely have a higher dietary protein requirement than younger pets.   
  That said, extremely high levels of protein, especially when not balanced with other nutrients, may pose health risks, such as disrupting a pet's calcium to phosphorus ratio or contributing to weight gain. Consult with your veterinarian to ensure your pet's protein intake matches their unique needs, including life stage, size and activity level.    Looking Ahead: Emerging Protein Alternatives    Did you know over 93% of pet food products worldwide contain animal protein? Although these are most often responsibly sourced as by-products, as the global population grows, so will the demand for animal protein—raising concerns about demand outpacing supply. 
  To ensure the long-term sustainability of pet food, industry research has turned toward alternative sources of protein, including insect-based ingredients, invasive species (such as Asian carp and blue catfish) and single-cell ingredients (like algae, fungi and yeast).  
  Another alternative protein source includes meat products not commonly consumed by humans, like alligator, kangaroo and rabbit. How often do pets have food allergies?   The worldwide prevalence of food allergies is increasing among people,1 but food allergies are considered uncommon in dogs and cats. It may seem more common in pets because many other health conditions have similar symptoms.2-4

Statistics about pets' food allergy prevalence can add to that misperception because the numbers vary depending on the reason for a pet's veterinary exam: only 1% of cats seen for a general health exam were diagnosed with food allergy, yet 21% of cats presented for itchy skin had the same diagnosis. 5,6      What causes food allergies?   Food allergies occur when an individual's immune system responds to a harmless food as a harmful 'invader.' This immune response differentiates food allergies from dietary intolerance, or food poisoning, which do not involve the immune system.

When food allergies do occur, the most common trigger is a protein. No particular protein is hypoallergenic. An allergic response is the result of an individual's immune reaction to the size or structure of a protein and is driven, in part, by prior exposure to the protein.3, 7-9

While ingredients such as grains have also been reported to cause food allergies, studies show it is the protein component of the grain that typically triggers the reaction.10

Grains are not among the most reported food allergens in either dogs or cats.

In dogs the top three food allergens are proteins from beef, dairy or chicken. In cats, the most commonly reported food allergens are from beef, chicken or fish.9     What role does nutrition play in food allergies?   The gold standard for the diagnosis of food allergy is a dietary elimination trial that combines one protein and one carbohydrate to which the pet has not previously been exposed.8 Studies show that allergy tests based on samples from skin, blood, saliva or hair produce unreliable results.11-14

Selecting novel proteins is not always easy; new protein sources may cross-react with the original allergen, and many pets have multiple food hypersensitivities.15,16 Diets must also be nutritionally complete and balanced, and ideally, be easy to feed during an 8-12 week dietary trial, or for long-term maintenance.

Feeding hydrolyzed protein diets can offer a convenient, nutritionally complete and balanced strategy for reducing food allergenicity.17-19   How do hydrolyzed proteins help manage food allergies?   Hydrolysis is a process that breaks proteins into smaller pieces. 'Ultra hydrolyzed' proteins are reduced to very small pieces. This process changes the size and structure of the protein— key factors in determining a protein's allergenicity.

In general, adverse immune reactions to a food ingredient require an allergen—typically a protein—large enough to crosslink receptors on the surface of specific immune cells. The altered size and structure of hydrolyzed proteins do not crosslink these cell surface receptors to trigger an immune response.7

Is Cultured Protein the Future of Protein in Pet Food?

Recent regulatory challenges, especially in the US, have cast doubt on its future, raising important questions about safety, cost, consumer acceptance, and legal disputes. 
  Positively, cultured proteins hold the potential to engineer species-appropriate formulations that optimize amino acid profiles while minimizing unhealthy fat content. This is particularly significant for obligate carnivores such as cats, where precise levels of taurine are essential. Despite this potential, many current prototypes still lack the micronutrient and mineral diversity typically found in organ meats, making supplementation necessary to achieve dietary balance. 
  Not only are pet owners motivated by the nutritional benefits, but they are also increasingly driven by concerns for sustainability and animal welfare. In early 2025, the UK became the first European country to approve lab-grown pet food, marking a major environmental milestone. However, terminology like 'lab-grown' or 'synthetic' may make many consumers uncomfortable, especially those who prefer natural and whole-food concepts.   Despite growing attention, cultured protein is facing significant legislative pushback. In the United States, several states, including Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Indiana, Texas, and Nebraska, have enacted or proposed outright bans on cultured proteins. Traditional ranchers and livestock groups strongly oppose the technology, viewing it as a direct threat to their livelihoods. They argue that the bans protect the integrity of conventional agriculture and reflect consumer skepticism. On the other hand, industry associations such as the Association for Meat, Poultry and Seafood Innovation contend that cultivated proteins are meant to complement, not replace, conventional meat, and not all ranchers are opposed. In response to restrictive state policies, several cultured protein startups have filed lawsuits, arguing the bans violate interstate commerce protections and amount to unconstitutional economic protectionism. 
  International responses to cultured protein vary widely. In Italy, for example, the government approved a law banning the production and sale of lab-grown meat, citing the need to protect the country's agri-food heritage and traditional cuisine. Conversely, Singapore continues to lead with the first approvals worldwide, while the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) novel food review process has slowed progress, leaving many startups in limbo. These global inconsistencies underscore the fragmented and politicized regulatory landscape that startups must navigate.  
  Even in regions with more supportive frameworks, costs remain a central challenge. Despite $1.6 billion in venture capital funding, many companies have faced layoffs, shutdowns, or long delays. In 2024, New Age Eats and SCiFi Foods closed after failing to secure sufficient funding. Others, however, are pushing forward. Mission Barns recently received FDA 'no questions' clearance for cultivated pork fat, aiming to release hybrid bacon products in 2025. Similarly, Upside Foods, which gained FDA clearance for cultivated chicken in 2023, continues to pursue market expansion despite facing state-level bans. This tension between innovation and accessibility highlights the delicate balance that companies must strike to remain viable and competitive. 
  Beyond cost and regulation, one of the most debated issues is the long-term health impact of cultured protein for both humans and companion animals. While no longitudinal feeding studies have been completed in pets, existing scientific reviews suggest some insights. Early research indicates that cultured protein can mirror the macronutrient and amino acid content of conventional meat, with the added benefit of controlled nutrient profiles. Yet, concerns remain about micronutrient adequacy, particularly for iron, zinc, and vitamin B12, unless supplementation is provided. Cultivated proteins may also reduce foodborne pathogen risks, such as Salmonella and E. coli, although questions remain about potential residues from growth factors or scaffolding materials (edible non-animal adhesive used in cultured protein production). Digestibility appears comparable to traditional meat, but the absence of long-term feeding studies in pets leaves metabolic and gut microbiome effects largely unknown, as cited by Mouat et al. in their paper, 'Cultured Meat and the Politics of Protein,' published in Food Policy in 2021. For now, cultured protein's long-term safety for pets is promising but unproven. 
  The following table summarizes the current opportunities and risks: 
    Taken together, cultured protein represents both opportunity and uncertainty. On one hand, it offers a safer, more sustainable protein source with the potential for custom nutrient profiles tailored to pet needs. On the other hand, unresolved concerns about micronutrient adequacy, long-term digestive health, and consumer trust make it an emerging but experimental option. Until long-term feeding trials and regulatory harmonization are achieved, cultured protein's position in pet food will remain a frontier of both promise and contention. 
  In conclusion, cultured protein is at a crossroads in the pet food industry. Its promise of nutritional engineering and sustainability collides with political resistance, economic challenges, and consumer skepticism. Without coordinated regulatory support and continued investment, its adoption may be confined to niche markets or hybrid formulations. For now, cultured protein in pet food remains both a scientific opportunity and a political battleground.
